About

Barnard provides a singular educational experience as a world-renowned college with the academic resources of Columbia University and the City of New York as an extended classroom. Founded in 1889, Barnard was one of the few colleges in the nation where women could receive the same rigorous and challenging education available to men. Today, Barnard is one of the most selective academic institutions in the country and remains devoted to empowering extraordinary women to become even more exceptional.

Barnard College and Columbia University have a historic relationship that’s unique in American higher education. Students share academic resources, extracurricular activities, athletic fields and even dining halls. Barnard students benefit from a college experience that offers small, intimate classes in a collaborative environment dedicated to women, along with access to the vast academic resources of Columbia University. Columbia undergraduates can access courses and programs of study, such as education, through Barnard College.

Program Info

Barnard’s Urban Teaching Program serves students from three of Columbia University’s undergraduate colleges: Barnard College, Columbia College and Columbia College of General Studies.

The College's mission is to prepare skilled and reflective teachers who:

  • Commit to fairness and justice in their classrooms and schools
  • Recognize and act on patterns of inequality in access and opportunity to learn
  • Provide a high-quality, engaging curriculum for all learners
  • Care about their students and convey through their actions their belief that all students can learn
  • Inspire in their students a passion for learning and a capacity to act in the world

Barnard offers two programs in Urban Teaching that prepare students for initial New York State teacher certification:

  • Elementary/Childhood Education (Grades 1-6)
  • Secondary/Adolescent Education (Grades 7-12)

For Barnard College students, the program is a minor in Urban Teaching. For Columbia College and Columbia College of General Studies students, the program is a Special Program in Urban Teaching (formerly a Special Concentration).
