Paraprofessionals—also known as paraeducators, teacher’s aides, or teaching assistants — support both students and certified teachers. In New York, especially New York City, there is a high demand for paraprofessionals in shortage areas such as math, science, bilingual education and special education. 

As a paraprofessional, you'll work closely with students 1-on-1 or in smaller groups under the guidance of a certified teacher. Your role calls for supporting the needs of the students and creating a healthy environment for them to learn. 

Becoming a paraprofessional

Check your local school district’s website to start looking for paraprofessional positions. To be eligible in New York, you must have authorization to work in the United States, have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent education, and have a nomination from a school principal.

When full-time teachers can’t be in the classroom, substitute teachers are there to ensure students still receive instruction. Substitute teaching allows you to work with different age groups and subjects and better understand what fulfills you.

If you’re enrolled in a teaching program or already have your teaching certification through the New York State Education Department, then you might be ready to apply for a classroom position.
