About
School of Visual Arts is a private art school that educates 7,000 students. Its mission is to educate future generations of artists, designers and creative professionals. SVA believes diversity and inclusion are the cornerstones of building a community by honoring multiple approaches of learning and making by artists from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences.
Among the 43,000 alums are Academy, Emmy, and Grammy award winners, as well as MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellows, whose work can be found in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more.
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is for artists interested in acquiring an initial New York state teaching certification in PreK-12 visual arts.
This degree program will provide you with:
- The skills to create dynamic and engaging art lessons
- Innovative and caring teaching strategies to use in the classroom
- An understanding of how to incorporate the New York State Learning Standards into your lessons
You will leave the program prepared for workshops mandated by the New York State Education Department, teacher certification exams and fingerprinting approval.

Up to $20,000
Scholarships
The School of Visual Arts offers departmental scholarships based on merit. These scholarships include the Catherine Rosamond Scholarship, Rose Viggiano Scholarship and the Whitfeld Lovell Scholarship. The award amount ranges from $5,000- $20,000.
Up to $2,000
Scholarships
The School of Visual Arts offers a matching scholarship of up to $2,000 if you find additional funding from an outside source.
