Offering free consulting, coaching and monthly workshops, the Stonewall Community Foundation is dedicated to providing resources and uplifting the LGBTQI+ community. The Stonewall Community Foundation currently has several grants and scholarships to support LGBTQI+ people pursuing their higher education.
Based in New York City, the Proud Educator Network mentors LGBTQI+ educators to become strong role models in the classroom. The Proud Educator Network hosts monthly and annual meetings and social gatherings centered around gender identity and creating a safer and inclusive space in schools. The Proud Educator Network also promotes advocacy for radical school reform.
PFlagNYC offers free and virtual support groups to LGBTQI+ people seeking a safe space to share their experiences. PFlagNYC also leads a Safe School Program to create a safer and more inclusive school environment for LGBTQI+ school staff and students. PFlagNYC representatives regularly visit New York to ensure no bias or hateful language in the classroom.
The LGBTQI+ community at Teachers College, Columbia University creates programming centered around advocating for LGBTQI+ rights in education and empowering aspiring educators through regular meetings, a monthly newsletter and an annual conference to gain a better understanding of being a part of the LGBTQI+ community in a school setting.
The NYCDOE Office of Safety & Youth Development teamed up with the Office of Curriculum, Instruction & Professional Learning to create “Yes! But How? LGBTQ+ Inclusion for Educators,” a guide on how K–12 teachers and school staff can create safe, inclusive and affirming LGBTQI+ school environments.
The National Education Association’s resource page provides educators with the tools they need to create an inclusive classroom while advocating for LGBTQI+ students and staff. Their toolkit includes book recommendations, interactive maps of gender-inclusive schools and valuable information from the US Department of Education.
